What is OptiBPM?
OptiBPM is Optiwave software for designing and analyzing integrated optical circuits — waveguides, couplers, splitters, modulators, and multiplexers — using the Beam Propagation Method (BPM). The BPM method is particularly effective for modeling light propagation in long waveguide structures, where FDTD would be too computationally expensive.
The program offers a CAD environment for drawing waveguide cross-sections and defining material profiles, then runs 2D or 3D beam propagation simulations. OptiBPM supports both semi-vectorial and full-vectorial solvers, with the ability to model birefringence and polarization effects. Results can be exported to OptiFDTD for more detailed analysis of selected parts of the circuit.

Frequently asked questions about OptiBPM
When should I use OptiBPM versus OptiFDTD?
OptiBPM is optimal for long waveguide systems (hundreds of micrometers to millimeters), where propagation angles are small (paraxial assumption). OptiFDTD performs well for short, strongly scattering structures and structures with periodic patterns. Both programs can work together.
Does OptiBPM support 3D waveguides?
Yes. OptiBPM offers 3D simulations with a full-vectorial solver for structures requiring consideration of birefringence and polarization effects.
Is integration with Python/MATLAB possible?
OptiBPM supports scripting through its own macro language. Exporting results to ASCII format enables further processing in Python or MATLAB.
