What is OptiGrating?
OptiGrating is Optiwave software considered the de facto standard for designing optical gratings integrated with waveguides and fibers. The program enables the design, optimization, and analysis of Bragg gratings (FBG), long-period gratings (LPG), chirped gratings, and sampled gratings — both in optical fibers and in silicon or polymer waveguides.
OptiGrating calculates grating transmission and reflection as a function of wavelength, mode profiles, mode coupling effects, and time response. The tool is essential for designers of optical filters, FBG sensors, dispersion compensation elements, and laser stabilizers.
OptiGrating key features
design and optimization of uniform, apodized, chirped, and phase-shifted gratings
calculation of core and cladding mode coupling
accurate calculations using coupled mode theory
efficient analysis of complex gratings and multi-segment systems
automatic tuning of grating parameters to a target spectrum

Frequently asked questions about OptiGrating
Does OptiGrating support gratings in silicon waveguides?
Yes. OptiGrating supports gratings in any type of waveguide — standard fibers, PCF, silicon waveguides, polymer, and others.
What is the difference between OptiGrating and OptiBPM in the context of gratings?
OptiGrating is dedicated specifically to gratings and uses Coupled Mode Theory — it gives more accurate results for gratings at lower computational cost. OptiBPM can simulate gratings via BPM, but OptiGrating is optimized specifically for this application.
Does the program calculate the response of FBG sensors to strain?
Yes. OptiGrating includes models of FBG response to temperature and mechanical strain, allowing the design and calibration of sensing systems.
