What is OptiOmega?
OptiOmega is Optiwave's newest product, designed for engineers working on photonic integrated circuits (PIC) and advanced photonic components. The program combines two solvers: a GPU-accelerated FDTD solver (NVIDIA CUDA graphics card) and a VFD (Vector Finite Difference) mode solver — both accessible via a Python scripting interface.
Unlike traditional tools with a graphical user interface, OptiOmega is designed for automation and integration into code-based workflows. It enables the generation of compact models of photonic components — ready for use in system-level simulations in OptiSystem or other PIC-PDK environments.
OptiOmega is especially valuable for teams working on nanophotonics, silicon photonics, and PIC design, where rapid iteration through component geometric parameters is key.
OptiOmega key features
EM computation accelerated by NVIDIA CUDA, many times faster than CPU for 3D structures
vector Finite Difference mode solver for analyzing mode profiles and effective indices
full simulation control via Python, enabling automation, parameter sweeps, and CI/CD integration
automatic creation of S-parameter models of photonic components for use in system-level simulations
results compatible with OptiSystem for system-level simulation
compatible with silicon foundry production processes (PDKs)

Frequently asked questions about OptiOmega
How does OptiOmega differ from OptiFDTD?
OptiFDTD offers a graphical CAD interface and is designed for designing individual components by an engineer working interactively. OptiOmega is a code-first tool — driven by Python, optimized for automation and generating compact models for PIC. Both use FDTD, but in different work paradigms.
Does OptiOmega require an NVIDIA graphics card?
GPU acceleration requires an NVIDIA card with CUDA support. The program also runs on CPU, but 3D computations will be significantly slower.
Is a trial available?
