What is RayViz?
RayViz is an add-in for SolidWorks developed by Lambda Research Corporation that brings key ray tracing functions directly into the CAD environment. With RayViz, mechanical and optical engineers can work on the same model without exporting and converting geometry between programs.
The tool allows assigning optical properties — materials, reflective and scattering coatings — to surfaces and solids in the SolidWorks model, then running a quick ray trace to verify geometry and ray paths. A model saved by RayViz is directly compatible with TracePro, enabling a smooth transition to full photometric analysis without data loss.
RayViz is especially valuable for design teams where mechanical and optical engineers work in parallel — it eliminates conversion errors and shortens the iteration time between mechanical design and optical analysis.
RayViz key features
assigning optical materials, coatings, and light sources from the TracePro database directly to the SW model
visualization of ray paths in the SolidWorks model without leaving the design environment
the same file used by SolidWorks (mechanical design) and TracePro (full optical analysis)
geometry modifications in SolidWorks automatically update in TracePro via the "Update from RayViz" function
quick checking of ray paths and detection of optical collisions early in the project
saving the SolidWorks model in TracePro format while preserving all optical properties

Frequently asked questions about RayViz
Does RayViz replace TracePro?
No. RayViz is a tool for quickly verifying geometry and visualizing rays in SolidWorks. TracePro is used for full photometric analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, and report generation. RayViz and TracePro are designed as complementary tools in a single workflow.
What version of SolidWorks does RayViz require?
RayViz is compatible with SolidWorks 2011 and later (64-bit). It requires an active SolidWorks license.
Can RayViz be used without TracePro?
Yes, RayViz works independently as a tool for visualization and assigning optical properties. However, full photometric analysis, reports, and optimization require TracePro.
Does RayViz support large SolidWorks assemblies?
Yes, RayViz works with full SolidWorks assemblies, supporting both single parts and complex opto-mechanical assemblies.
