PIC simulation for a 400G-DR4 transceiver

A PIC transceiver is a transmitter based on a photonic integrated circuit just a few square millimeters in area, sending multiple wavelengths simultaneously. The cost of a manufacturing error at the fab is tens of thousands of dollars — losses were avoided thanks to prior simulation of the O/E/O path.

Results

Correcting signal degradation in the electronic layer (the transimpedance amplifier, TIA) made it possible to confidently send the design to the CMOS fab — with the component and the full 100G link, over 500 m of single-mode SMF fiber, confirmed to work correctly.

Software used

Dlaczego to narzędzie. Integrated-photonics components (couplers, waveguides) are designed in OptiFDTD, while the behavior of the entire 400G link — the O/E/O budget, BER — is handled in OptiSystem. A complete path from component to system catches errors before costly fab production.
